THE FIRST COMPARTMENT of hell is called Tartarus. It is where the fallen angels that sinned before and after the Flood are bound in chains. All those so called gods, like Zeus and Apollo and their giant and monstrous offspring are there.

THE SECOND PRISON section is called Hell. It was, still is, and will continue to be the place where all the wicked human souls from Cain to the end of the Millennium go. Then at that time, all the wicked souls will be liberated out of this prison and will be given immortal bodies and be judged after the Millennium at the Great White Throne judgment before being cast into the Lake of Fire forever (Revelations 20:11-15, 21;8) This will be after the Millennium 3000 A.D.

THE THIRD PRISON is the abyss or bottomless pit. It is the dwelling place of demons and certain angelic beings. No human being ever goes to the abyss. The Old Testament equivalent is Abaddon and is translated as ‘destruction’ in Job 26:5,6; 28:22; 31:12. The abyss is an immeasurable depth. It is a very deep chasm in the lower parts of the Earth. It is translated ‘deep’ in Luke 8:26-31; Romans 10:7, and ‘bottomless pit’ in Revelations 9:1-3, 11; 11:7; 17:8; 20:10. These Scriptures are further proofs that there are prisons in the lower parts of the Earth for departed spirits.

THE FOURTH PRISON is called the Lake of Fire. This department is the eternal hell and perdition of wicked men, demons, fallen angels, and all rebellious creatures who have ever rebelled against God. It is called the Gehenna of Fire and is always translated ‘hell’. (Matthew 5:22, 29, 30; 10:28; 18:9; 23:15, 33; Mark 9:43; Luke 12:5; James 3:6).

Instead of the final state penitentiary, we might call it the final penitentiary of the universe. The sentence here is for all of eternity. There will be no pardons, appeals, or parole. There will be an opening from the first hell to the surface during the Millennium so all will be able to see what happens to rebels. One of the openings will be the original site of the city of Babylon. The opening will be changed to the Lake of Fire after the Great White Throne Judgment so that all will be able to view the fate of rebels throughout all eternity.

THE FIFTH COMPARTMENT is called Paradise (Luke 16:19-31, 23:43). It is a place of comfort, water, and bliss. It was where the righteous souls and spirits lived after leaving their bodies at physical death. All the righteous went into this prison and were held captive by the devil against their will (Hebrews 2:14,15; Ephesians 4:7-11). The devil had the power of death and of the underworld before Christ conquered him. (Colossians 2:14-17; Revelations 1:18) It was into this prison that the penitent thief and Jesus went on the day they died. Luke 23:43, Matthew 12:40, Ephesians 4:7-11 make it clear that Paradise is located in the heart and lower parts of the Earth. Christ not only went into his prison, but He also went into Tartarus and preached to the angels. In fact, He conquered death, hell and the grave during his crucifixion and during the three days He was in the underworld. He rescued all the righteous souls who were in Paradise and took them to Heaven when he ascended on high. He now has the keys of hell and death. Ever since that time, the righteous go directly to Heaven (2 Corinthians 5:8; Phillippians 1:21-35; Hebrews 12:23; and Revelations 6:9,11).

Paradise is now empty. Or is it? There is a chance it is now being used by others. This will be covered in another chapter.

All people in the New Earth after the Millennium will be permitted to see those who are in Hell. Isaiah 66:24 And they shall go forth, and look upon the carcasses of men that have transgressed against me: for their worm shall not die, neither shall their fire be quenched; and they shall be an abhorring unto all flesh.

note: All flesh=natural men on the earth will be permitted to look eternal hell at certain openings, and see the punishment of rebels forever as a perpetual warning against sin and transgression.

The carcasses here are the bodies of men in eternal hell which will never be destroyed; bodies that will have been resurrected to immortality or deathlessness so that they may be punished for deeds done in the body before death (v 24). These eternal bodies in hell are considered dead carcasses because of being without the life God has given to the resurrected saints.

This refers to men of all the ages who have died in sin and will be sent to eternal hell where their worm will not die and the fire will not be quenched.

Mark 9:23 And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire, that shall never be quenched. Verse 44: where their worm dieth not and the fire is not quenched. Verse 45: foot. Verse 46 eye.

Deuteronomy 32:22 For a fire is kindled in mine anger, and shall burn unto the lowest hell, and shall consume the earth with her increase, and set on fire the foundations of the mountains.

Sheol, the unseen world; the place of departed spirits in the lower parts of the earth (v22: Matthew 12:40; Ephesians 4:8-10)

Matthew 12:40 For as Jonah was 3 days and 3 nights in the whale's belly, so shall the Son of Man be 3 days and 3 nights in the heart of the earth.

Ephesians 4:8-10 Wherefore He saith, when He ascended up on high (This was at the ascension 40 days after His resurrection Psalm 68:18; Acts 1:3-11; Luke 24:51; Mark 16:19) He led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men.

He led a body of captives to heaven like an earthly conqueror. These were the immortal saints liberated from the captivity of Satan where they were held until Christ accomplished the plan of salvation. (Hebrews 2: 14-15; 12:23).

Eph 4:9 (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth?

Eph 4:10 He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.)

Before He ascended to heaven He descended to hell. (v 9; Psalms 16:10; Matthew 12:40).

Psalm 68:18 Thou hast ascended on high, thou hast led captivity captive: thou hast received gifts for men; yea, for the rebellious also, that the LORD God might dwell among them.

Lower parts of the earth: Proof that hell is located in the lower parts of the earth, not on the surface of earth as with the grave (Ephesians 4:9; Psalms 16:10; 63:9; Job 11:8; Deuteronomy 32:22; Isaiah14:9; 66:22-24; Proverbs 9: 18; 15:24; Ezekiel 31:14-18; 32:18-24). Hell here is contrasted with the highest heaven as being the lowest and deeper part of the earth.

FACTS ABOUT HELL

1. It is a place of fire (Deuteronomy 32:22; Song 8:6; Luke 16:19-31)

2. It was kindled because of God's wrath on sin. (Psalm 9:17; Matthew 25:4)

3. There are different compartments, one being the lowest hell (Deuteronomy 32:22; Luke 16: 19-31; 28:43).

4. Hell shall consume the earth's increase of men who die in rebellion (v 22;; Isaiah 5:14; 14:9; Revelation 20:11-15)

5. It will set the foundations of the mountains on fire (Deuteronomy 32:22)

LUKE 16:19-31

Luk 16:19 There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day:

Luk 16:20 And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores,

Luk 16:21 And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores.
Luk 16:22 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried;
Luk 16:23 And in hell he lifted up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.
Luk 16:24 And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.
Luk 16:25 But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.
Luk 16:26 And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.
Luk 16:27 Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house:
Luk 16:28 For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.
Luk 16:29 Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.
Luk 16:30 And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent.
Luk 16:31 And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.

Note: Many think this is just a parable. Jesus never mentions names in parables. The beggar's name is Lazarus. He also names Abraham's bosom. He is naming  real people. Only the rich man is unnamed. In parables He will say "a certain man or a certain woman," never giving them actual names.

Gehenna  is defined as the place of future torment: hell; Hell-fire.

Tartarus is defined as the place of punishment in the lower world.

8 Facts About Tartarus

1. A prison for angels (v 4 of 2 Peter 2)

2. Located under the earth.

3. A place of confinement for angels until the judgment (v 4; Rev. 20: 11-15; Jude 6)

4. A place visited by Christ when he went to hell. (Psalm 16:10; 1 Peter 3:19)

5. A place of darkness (Jude 6-7)

6. A place of eternal fire (Jude 7)

7. A place of vengeance (Jude 7)

8. The word is used only here but in Greek writings Tartarus was held to be a place in the earth lower than hades where the Titans, the primeval dieties or giants who were supposed to be the first children of the earth and even older than the Greek gods, were cast when they lost their war with Zeus.

conclusion: Peter's argument is that if God did not spare the angels, the antediluvians and the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, He will not spare any man who lives ungodly, including the backslider. (v9-22 of 2 Peter 2)

Paradise Compartment of Hell

A place other than the grave for the righteous who, until Christ came, were captives of the devil against their will (Hebrews 2: 14-15) It was called Abraham's bosom (Luke 16:22) and Paradise (Luke 23:43)

It was the hiding place from God's wrath after death (Job 14:13; Luke 16:19-31)

Lazarus went into this place of comfort, but his body went to the grave.

Christ and the penitent thief went into Paradise at death (Psalm 16:10; Matthew 12:40; Luke 23:43; Ephesians 4:8-10)

Angels carried the righteous souls into this compartment. (Luke 16:22-26; 23:43)

Christ, while there, preached to the angels in Tartarus. (Psalm 16:10; 1 Peter 3:19)

By the Holy Spirit anointing Jesus preached to the angels in Tartarus while His body was in the grave.

Christ, while in Sheol (Hades), liberated the righteous captives of Satan taking them to heaven with Him when He ascended on high. (Ephesians 4:8-10; Hebrews 2:14-15)

Paradise is not empty of all the righteous souls. (Ephesians 4:8-10 ; Hebrews 12:23)

Prayer for Salvation: Jesus Christ is the Son of God. If we have invited Jesus to come and live within us and be the Lord of our lives then our inheritance in the future kingdom is assured.

God's word says in John 14:6, "Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me."

In order to invite Jesus to be your Savior and Lord, you must believe in you heart that He is the Son of God, believe that He died upon the cross of Calvary as an atonement for your wrong doings, and believe that He arose from death and the grave. We must confess and repent of our sins and confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. If you have never done this then stop right now and pray this prayer.

Heavenly Father, I come to You in the Name of Jesus repenting and asking forgiveness of all my sins. Your Word says, "whosoever shall call on the Name of the Lord shall be saved" (Acts 2:21). I am calling on You. I pray and ask Jesus to come into my heart and be Lord over my life according to Romans 10:9-10. "If thou shall confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus and shalt believe in thine heart that God has raised Him from the dead thou shalt be saved" I do that now. I confess that Jesus is Lord, and I believe in my heart that God raised Him from the dead. I am a Christian ..a child of Almighty God! I am saved!

You are now an heir to the Kingdom of God! Your future is assured. I want to encourage you to find a church in your local area to attend. Tell someone that you have just received Jesus as your Lord. Than start digging into God's Word.

"I am not ashamed; for I know whom I have believed and I am convinced that He is able to guard what I have entrusted to Him until that day" (2 Timothy 1:12).
